Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in the protection of fish health

Barbara Kazuń, Krzysztof Kazuń, Andrzej K. Siwicki

ABSTRACT. Bacterial antibiotic resistance is a real and increasingly common emergency. Therefore, developing efficient alternative methods of bacterial disease treatment is important. Non-digestible food ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics affect fish hosts by stimulating the growth and/or activity of the gut microbiota. The use of these food ingredients increases innate immune parameters and leads to decreased antibiotic use in aquaculture.
